The Société d'Histoire et d'archéologie de Chalon-sur-Saône (SHAC) was created more than 170 years ago by a handful of scholars who are part of the national movement of knowledge of heritage and scholarly emulation. A knowledge that gained importance with the creation of the service of «Historical Monuments» in 1834, a true symbol of a collective awareness of the importance of the inventory and the safeguarding of the heritage. The History Society was born ten years later at the end of 1844\. For its creators it was a question of finding the sources of the history of Chalon and its near region by two simple means: the archives and the archaeological discoveries. Very quickly, the History Society gave itself a motto: «Servare, Narrare» meaning to keep and say. The objects and archives were kept on the premises of the Historical Society.
