Auxonne is a city of passage and exchanges, crossroads between waterways and land. After besieging the city in 1479 and then annexed the Burgundian states, the king of France Louis XI built a real fortress in Auxonne. Due to its strategic position, the city thus becomes a border city. Louis XI also built two other castles in Burgundy, Beaune and Dijon. These three castles are called the «three sisters» of the Duchy of Burgundy. The castle has undergone several transformations but the general physiognomy of the works has been preserved. Of the three royal castles of Burgundy, only the castle of Auxonne has been preserved.
