This gate is an exceptional testimony of the fortifications of Philippe Auguste, with its northern façade, little modified: it still presents its defensive system characterized by its spur side towers and a set of bias lines that provided maximum protection and efficiency to its defenders. Under the vault, one clearly distinguishes the grooves where the two harrows which ensured the closing of the door and constituted a real lock, reinforced laterally by four archers that allowed defenders to cross-fire an enemy who had crossed the first harrow. Stun blinds, placed in front of the first harrow and after the second, completed this device. One should not imagine a drawbridge, still unknown at the time of its construction. Inside the walls, there are the stairs that allowed access to the floor of the door and the curtains that encircled the city on a perimeter of nearly 2 km.
