We are pleased to present the major project 2023 of the Association de sauvegarde de la Chapelle de Châtenay in Lens-Lestang, the exhibition:
"Way of the Cross, Way of Art" Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 September 2023 European Heritage Days
The 19th century Way of the Cross, which has hung in the nave of the chapel for more than 100 years, has just benefited from a complete restoration in the expert hands of Vincent Ollier, a recognized specialist in heritage circles. Exclusive to the exhibition, this beautiful furniture will be presented for the very first time in its new brilliance.
The 14 large paintings that compose it, in polychrome molded plaster, painted by hand, are recorded in the repertoire of the heritage of the Drôme for some years. They had suffered the ravages of time and required a lot of restoration work to perpetuate them to offer future generations the chance to fully enjoy them. The paintings will be rid of dust, soot, moisture damage. In addition, paint retouching will fill the many accidents and chipping observed. Thus, on September 16 and 17, visitors will discover the Way of the Cross in its original brilliance. The financing of this project could be completed thanks to various grants (Conservation of the Heritage of the Drôme, Society for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments of the Drôme, commune) and thanks to sponsorships concluded with 3 local companies.
Note that the 14 paintings will be, for the occasion, exhibited at the height of man as in a museum. (They will find after their usual place, more than 3m high). Thus it will be possible to discover, like works of art, all the richness, finesse, details of the characters, scenes and frames as well as the multitude of shades of color.
Nb: Members of heritage associations who could not travel on September 16 & 17, occupied by their own event, can discover the exhibition from Friday 15 afternoon.

The Chapel of Châtenay in Lens-Lestang The origin of the Romanesque chapel of Châtenay dates back to the XII century. Built after a vow made by the wife of the Lord of Lens so that her husband would return safe and sound from the crusades. Plundered and partially destroyed during the wars of religion, then again in the Revolution, it was rebuilt every time. Now restored, it houses a monthly religious service and a pilgrimage on 15 August. During the National Heritage Days 2021, a photo exhibition «Les chapelles de Pays en Drôme des collines et en Isère voisine» is proposed in the building.
