LITTLE BIGHORN, BY OUSMANE SOW A milestone in the history of the United States of America The work of Senegalese sculptor Ousmane Sow makes you relive the famous battle between the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians and the federal army of the United States-Joined in 1876 by the Little Bighorn River.
Sitting Bull in prayer will welcome you at the entrance of the exhibition. Represented during the «Sun Dance», Sitting Bull is away from the fight and turns his back on the sculptures illustrating the heart of the battle. Among these, you will recognize The Charge of Two Moons, the major scene of the series, with four dead horses spanned by Two Moons and his horse, assaulting the Immobilized Soldier and the Overturned Soldier (an Indian traitor).
The second part of the exhibition hosts some striking scenes representing the defeat of American troops: The Bugle, Custer’s Death or the Scalp Scene.
Confront yourself with the sculptures of Ousmane Sow Trained physiotherapist, Ousmane Sow has sculpted mostly men in action.
His works are the culmination of patient work and long reflection on the human body. A body that he does not hesitate to crush, deform, recreate, to bend it to what he wants to express.”
Jacques A. Bertrand
All the works were sculpted according to a technique specific to the artist: structure in concrete iron – plastic straw melted and modeled, then jute canvas coated with a material of its composition.
To learn more about the artist’s life and works and his technique, as well as the Battle of Little Bighorn and its historical context, head to the mediation space at the end of the gallery.
Enjoy a unique exhibition space The work «Little Bighorn» is exhibited under the exceptional Philibert Delorme structure on the roof of the Rochambeau barracks in Mont-Dauphin.
This barracks, built in the 18th century, is one of three barracks in the fortified village of Mont-Dauphin. Leaning against the southern rampart of the village, the Rochambeau barracks has allowed the accommodation of more than 600 soldiers. Originally covered with an artillery terrace, the barracks was equipped at the beginning of the nineteenth century with an exceptional cradle frame that takes up a process invented in the sixteenth century by Philibert Delorme. The exhibition space corresponds to the part of the structure restored in 2015.
