Before becoming a center of contemporary art, the Black Penitents led several lives since the 11th century passing from chapel to hospital. The building became the art gallery of the city in 2008\. Then 10 years later, contemporary art center. Black penitents are today recognized by the public, professionals of the Art, and radiate far beyond the departmental limits. At the time of the Metropolis, the art center has the vocation to play a major role in the life of contemporary art in the East of Marseille. The definition of his artistic line contributed to his regularity. Two to three exhibitions a year highlight the new, the ephemeral, the original for an attractive diversity, always attracting the interest of the public and the cultural actors, thanks to a work in network on the locality, the territory and with the partners (museums, foundations, national collectors).
