A village in the city, with neo-gothic architecture, the Charles Perrens Hospital Centre is an example of «asilar» and rationalist architecture.

Built on 14 ha between vines and fruit trees, the Château-Picon was inaugurated in 1890, replacing the dilapidated Saint-Jean asylum. Dedicated to women, it is the work of the Bergerac architect JJ. Valleton. A true village in the city, with its buildings and chapel with unique architecture, green spaces and history, it became mixed and changed its name in 1974 to become the Charles Perrens Hospital Centre, marking the beginning of a new mental health policy in France. At the heart of the city’s mental health care systems, as close as possible to the university and the Pellegrin hospital, it has been involved for more than thirty years in a dynamic of medical innovation, advanced management, teaching and research.

Asylum and rationalistic architecture of the end of the XIXth century, the Charles Perrens hospital centre keeps the memory of reflexions at the origin of its development. His(Her,Its) past, since his(her,its) origins on course(price) Saint Jean up to his(her,its) edification on course for Béchade, is rich in upheavals and in collaborations: utopian doctors, philanthropists and idealistic architects.
