À propos du lieu

Haitzeko Gaztelua - Château de Haitze
Château de Haitze, 64480 Ustaritz
  • Pyrénées-Atlantiques
  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine
A very active river port of the Nive, Ustaritz was mentioned in the 11th century as a stage for pilgrims on the Santiago de Compostela road. Around 1170, the viscount of Labourd, driven out of Bayonne by Richard-Coeur de Lion, moved to Ustaritz which became the capital of Labourd until 1790\. Among the most illustrious members of the Haitze family are Sanz d'Haitze, bishop of Bayonne in the 13th century, and André Haitze, mayor of Ustaritz for sixteen years between 1795 and 1832\. Burned in 1523 during the siege of the Spanish army of Philibert de Chalons, the current castle of Haitze dates back to the 17th century and one of the two pavilions that frame the body of the house dates from the 19th century. Planted in the middle of an oak grove and facing south, the building has braces painted in dark red reminding the timbering and woodwork of Basque houses.
