In 1060, at the beginning of the reign of Philippe I, under the administration of Galéran I, count of Meulan, was born at Meulan in one of the oldest families in the country, the Mauvoisin, a child named Gaucher… (“Her birth was preceded by several revelations which made her mother perceive that the child she bore in her womb would be a great servant of God”).
He was raised as a nurse in the hamlet of Chartre, at that time dependent on the village of Juziers. As soon as he was old enough to study, his parents made him take lessons in French, Latin, and Gregorian chants with the rector of Gargenville. At the age of 18 Gaucher, accompanied by his faithful friend Germond, left Meulan and his father’s house. They both lived alone for three years in Chavagnac (in the Limousin). Despite Gaucher’s desire to remain unknown, his reputation for piety attracted visitors and as some wanted to become his disciples, he considered building a monastery.
