The Zizim Tower has dominated the medieval city of Bourganeuf since the end of the 15th century and gives an unusual story, that of an Ottoman sultan who was imprisoned there for two years.

Within the walls of the Commandery of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, founded at Bourganeuf in the twelfth century, a tower stands out from the other buildings. Its history is singular: it was built at the end of the 15th century under the orders of Guy de Blanchefort, nephew of Pierre d'Aubusson, Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem. It welcomed an extraordinary prisoner: son of the emperor Mehmet II, Djem is nicknamed Zizim, Ottoman prince eponymous of the big tower! The massive construction is elegant. It rises on 5 floors, two of which were reserved for the Prince’s apartments and at that time included unusual equipment such as the latrines and fireplaces on each floor, a cellar housing a central well and a superb oak frame under the roof. Climbing one by one the 99 steps leading from the entrance to the attic, you will discover life in the time of Zizim, but also the more recent history.
