"On September 12, 1808, Napoleon I signed the decree called «de Bayonne», making a donation to the department of Landes of the convent of Sainte-Claire in Mont-de-Marsan, to establish a prefecture hotel. From the Empire to the Republic, men and women have made the destiny of the Landes prefecture. The neoclassical building has more than two centuries of history. Since its construction from 1810 to its recent renovation to restore the brilliance and nobility lost over time, the building is a central element of the Montoise city. The Landais and the Montois are attached to this building. I have at heart, as the representative of the State in the Landes, that this house - the house of the Republic - is that of all. It is a legacy of our history and our republican institutions, it is up to everyone to appropriate it". Françoise TAHERI Prefect of the Landes.

The building was designed by architects David-François Panay and Augustin Arthaud. It was designed from 1808 to 1810, and the foundation stone was laid on 29 September 1810\. The work was completed in 1819, when the Baron d'Haussez, the first prefect to occupy the place, settled.
It is the convent of the Poor Clares, built in 1691, which serves as the foundation of the new building, which then adopts the neoclassical style in vogue during the First Empire. The façade is adorned with a portico with four Ionic columns, while the two wings have bronze doors decorated with pine cones locally called gables. An iron footbridge was built in 1844 to connect the prefecture, located on the left bank of the Twelve, to its gardens which were on the other side.
