Chapelle Saint-Raphaël

- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
This chapel dates from 1457 and is located in the middle of a 12-hectare building. Pey Berland (1375-1458) was born here. This man of good sense, of great wisdom and very quickly noticed for his intelligence became parish priest of Bouliac around 1412, then appointed archbishop of Bordeaux in 1430 by Pope Martin V. We owe him many achievements including the building of the Pey Berland cathedral in Bordeaux, but especially the creation of the University of Bordeaux which still bears his arms. A generous man, he was always present among the humble and the most destitute, despite the vicissitudes caused by the Hundred Years' War. A man ardent in doing good, his powers were immense, going as far as the right of life or death by royal delegation of Henri Plantagenet, King of England and Guyennen husband to alienate Aquitaine. Every year, a pilgrimage takes place in this chapel built on the site of his native house.
