Ville du Barp
75 avenue des Pyrénées, 33114 Le Barp
- Gironde
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The village was founded around the Barp Hospital which existed from the 13th century. There is no remnant of the priory and hospital that received so many pilgrims.
Abandoned in the 15th century, the buildings were located on the site of the parish church.
It was then an important stop for those who were going to face the immense forests and the dangers they could hide. A pilgrim of Saint James was a pilgrim all his life. He treasured his «compostelle», his shell and his «bumblebee», walking stick.
The Barp was certainly a land of moors but there were however some woods, at least in the eighteenth century (map of Belleyme): hardwoods, mainly tauzin oaks, and pedunculates, along the Lacanau.
