Église Saint-Hilaire
2bis route du Bourg, 24140 Saint-Hilaire-d'Estissac
- Dordogne
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The building consists of a nave with 2 bays, the second with a dome and a choir vaulted in the buttock. Eleven arcatures, eight of which are blind, decorate the choir.
In the south wall, a full-arched door opens onto a 19th century chapel. The facade is composed of a high bell tower-wall with 2 bell bays against which was added a large square room.
The portal in basket handle, is framed by 2 islets, supporting a entablature whose ends are decorated with a sphere of stone. At half height, a rectangular opening would help to defend the door.
The semi-circular bedside had to be raised during the fortification of the 14th century church to serve as a refuge for the inhabitants of the village, during the Hundred Years War and the various wars of religion.
