Cigarette camps were transit camps for GI’s waiting to return home. At Gonfreville l'Orcher, the "Philip Morris" camp saw more than a million men pass through between 1945 and 1947, before serving as an emergency city for 35 years for Havens deprived of housing following the bombing of 1944.
