Located on a rocky outcrop overlooking the village of Montfort and the Risle valley at an altitude of nearly 120 metres, the castle forms a vast complex with a depth of 280 metres and a width of 165 metres. With a total area of 4.6 hectares, the site represents a particularly advantageous location allowing it to control the land routes leading from Pont-Audemer to Brionne and from Lieurey to Montfort. In addition, the strategic location makes it possible to prevent any danger coming from river traffic and favors the control of one of the rare crossing points of the Risle in the eleventh and twelfth centuries.. The castle consists, to the north, of an advanced work commonly called the Grand Ber which is surrounded by a wide ditch. This work seems to be related to a poultry-yard of modest dimensions.
