First lit on 1 July 1839 to protect mariners from the passage of the diversion, the Carteret lighthouse opened for the first time to the public in 2016.
This lighthouse, about fifteen meters high, perched on the Cap de Carteret, dominates the sea with a height of 85 meters.
After enjoying this breathtaking view, take the time to discover the museum part: the exhibition of maritime lighting devices on loan from the Lighthouses and Beacons, the explanatory panels recalling the history of the lighthouse but also the room dedicated to the lives of the guards! Dressed in period décor, you will find in this room some portraits of guards who have done their years of service at the Carteret lighthouse. A soundtrack and letters displayed in memory of their memory will immerse you in their daily life.
Finally, an outdoor exhibition on the theme of seabirds "SEA BIRDS the birds of the extreme" by photographer Arnaud GUERIN is visible in the gardens at the opening days and times of the lighthouse.
The Cotentin Cetacean Study Group will be present on 17 and 18 September to discuss bottlenose dolphins, species visible on our coasts and studied for many years.
