Guided tours of Saint Gilles Church in Saint Forget
Free guided tours between 14:00 and 18:00 during the 2 Heritage days of the church of Saint Gilles located in the town of Saint Forget. Subservient to the lords of Chevreuse since 1230, located between the lands of Mauvières and Becquancourt, the church has been enclosed since 1556 within the walls of the park of the Château de Dampierre. The church is called Saint Ferréol (from the Latin ferreolus, man of iron) Saint also from Athens who evangelized the Franche-Comté and suffered martyrdom in Vienna in the third century. It is also called Saint Gilles Church.
With the help of a few volunteers, the municipality of Saint Forget has undertaken an ambitious program of restoration of what will prove to be a superb testimony of the art of the fresco painters of the late fifteenth century The frescoes discovered testify to a quality of craftsmanship evident both in terms of drawing, of the line as expressions and colors as well as a perfect mastery of the technique of Italian frescoes.
Since March 11, 2003 the site is now listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments.
