Maryse Rivière, author of the novel "Eugène Carrière ou la Magie du Rêve", published by L'Harmattan in 2020, has chosen a selection of varied texts (letters, extracts from novels, etc....) contemporary or from the time of the painter Eugène Carrière for readings around the creation. From his birth in Gournay on January 16, 1849, we remember a double birth to life and art. It was because of his place of birth that Eugène Carrière obtained a scholarship for the Beaux-Arts which proved decisive in his desire to become a painter. In the entrance hall, self-portraits and photographs reveal the face of a man of temperament whose confidence masks questions about his time. More confidential aspects of his work, such as the lithographic part, are exhibited. At the forefront of the painters-engravers, Eugène Carrière transposes the sculptural construction of his works onto stone or copper. Inspired by childhood, to which a section of the exhibition is devoted, Eugène Carrière is a portrait painter of intimacy and emotion. Landscape artist in his own time, the painter delivers in rare paintings a very personal understanding of nature.
