The equestrian section of the Military School

The equestrian section has existed since the establishment of the Military School in the 18th century. Today it has 80 horses and continues the tradition of military horseback riding.

The equestrian section of the Military School opens its stables and saddlery to the public. It offers demonstrations: covers, farrier, dressage, dressage, discovery of equestrian world...

  • Free visit: Saturday from 1.30pm and Sunday from 10am.
  • Demonstrations: Saturday at 15:00 (dressage) and 17:00 (show jumping); Sunday at 14:00 (show jumping) and 17:00 (dressage)

Louis XV, at the instigation of the Paris brothers and Madame de Pompadour, set his sights on the plain of Grenelle, a former Garenne, which was part of the Sainte-Geneviève abbey and part of the Hôtel des Invalides in order to create a military school. Ange-Jacques Gabriel was chosen to design and ensure the construction of the buildings. In 1773, the work was completed. The royal courtyard is framed by porticoes with Doric columns on the ground floor and Ionic upstairs. The central body or castle dominates it without ostentation, decorated with colossal Corinthian columns and surmounted by a quadrangular dome. In 1780, the architect Gabriel being 82 years old, the architect Boullée, then the architect Théodore Brongniart who completes the work and finishes in particular the side pavilions of the castle. In 1787, the school was definitively closed. Its premises were assigned to the Hôtel-Dieu. The Revolution first established a flour depot and hand mills there, and in August 1792 the
