Saint Stephen’s Cathedral, the first Greek Orthodox church in Paris, was founded in 1890 and inaugurated in 1895\. Its founders are the brothers Demetrius and Paul Stéfanovich Schilizzi (Σκυλίτση), also known for having erected the Institute of Orthodox Theology in Halki (present-day Turkey). The church was dedicated to Saint Stephen, in tribute to the grandfather of the founders, Stéphane Schilizzi, victim of the massacre of Chios (1822).
Four famous artists of the late 19th century worked at Saint-Stéphane Church:
* the French architect, Emile VAUDREMER (1829-1914), to whom we also owe Notre-Dame d'Auteuil
* the French painter, Charles LAMEIRE (1832-1910), also author of the decorations of Notre-Dame de Lorette
* the German painter Ludwig THIERSCH (1825-1909), who also painted icons and frescoes in Vienna and Saint Petersburg
* the French master glassmaker, Léon AVENET (1844-1899), also author of the stained glass windows of Notre-Dame d'Auteuil
