The crypt dates back to at least the 11th century. It is one of the last witnesses of the buildings that existed before the construction of the Notre-Dame cathedral. It was probably used to shelter the relics of Saints Gervais and Protais. It is one of the hidden treasures of the cathedral that you can discover on a free visit.

À propos du lieu

Notre-Dame Cathedral was built, for the most part, during the third quarter of the 12th century, when the royal city of Senlis was experiencing a true “golden age”. Profoundly altered in the 13th and 16th centuries, it enjoys, compared to many others, a relatively modest reputation only its small size and the many alterations suffered since its construction, without however justifying it. In fact, Notre-Dame de Senlis has strong assets that will win over both the art historian and the visitor. Important witness of the early Gothic architecture and the complexity of its sources, its great merit is to achieve a balanced and coherent synthesis between respect for proven formulas inherited from Romanesque architecture and the most innovative trends of the art of building of its time.
