Château fort du Nouveau-Windstein
8 rue du Schlossberg, 67110 Windstein
The New Windstein is a castle ruin, located on the commune of Windstein at the confluence of the Wineckerthal valley and the Schwartzbach, on the summit of the Schlossberg at 360m altitude. It was erected in the 13th century. It has an impressive shield wall with a height of 22m, made up of boulders. Two large palaces remain: the lower palace is high on 2 levels and overlooks a cellar; the upper palace of pentagonal plan is leaned against the north side of the shield wall: it has 3 levels. During the sixteenth century were added protective devices: a curtain with shooting slots, a bretèche and a barbacane in front of the primitive entrance door.
The association has been maintaining the site for about 20 years by ensuring brushing, weeding... We also undertook archaeological work around the Barbacane, work to secure the northern bastion and participated in the establishment of new tourist facilities.
