Located in a crossroads between Alsace and Lorraine, Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines has developed around the exploitation of silver mines and its textile industry.
Over time, it also became a veritable religious patchwork and front-line city during the First World War.

Our beautiful valley, more commonly called the Val d'Argent, is ideally located in the center of Alsace, halfway between Strasbourg and Colmar, in the heart of the Natural Regional Park of the Ballon des Vosges. A true haven of green peace sheltered from mass tourism, the Val d'Argent is however close to many key Alsatian tourist sites such as the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg, the mountain of the monkeys or the volerie of the eagles.
Labeled «City and Country of Art and History» in 2005, this national label allows to highlight the territory of the Val d'Argent and especially all its richness and singularity. Thanks to the activities organised by the Heritage Department, the label thus takes its rightful place and offers visitors the opportunity to discover the history of the Silver Valley through guided or theatrical tours, exhibitions and conferences, or a Centre for Heritage Interpretation and Architecture.
