Archives départementales de la Marne - Centre de Châlons-en-Champagne
23 Rue Carnot, 51000 Châlons-en-Champagne
The Archives of the Marne are the memory of the department. Service(Department) of the departmental Council(Advise), they keep(preserve) a 32 km collection of documents shelf spaces of archives, dating from the Xth century to our days: charters and parish registers or of registry office(civil status), administrative files(cases) and of legal proceedings, but also private funds, figurative documents (engravings, posters, postcards, photographies...) works and local periodicals, and many others else to discover or to rediscover. The departmental service(department) of archives, created in 1797 in Châlons-sur-Marne, settles down in 1866 in a new building(ship) in front of the Prefecture, specifically conceived(designed) for this mission. It is besides one of the first buildings(ships) built in France to shelter archives! From that time, the building regularly made the object of works, of extension and of renovation. Indeed, the collections of the Archives of the Marne did not cease increasing and it was periodically necessary to find the additional place(square). Certain arrangements(developments) also allowed to improve the work of the archivists, as well as the welcome(reception) of the public.
