Archives, what is they? In the collective imagination, they are often old papers stored in a corner and that take the dust. In reality, two elements are taken into account: the supports (clay or engraved stone, papyrus, bamboos, papers, plans, objects, photographs, films, DVDs, CDs, magnetic tapes, hard disks, etc.) and the information they contain.
But the more fragile the medium, the more difficult the information is to preserve and sustain. Nevertheless, since the end of the 19th century, the improvement of techniques has made it possible to multiply supports. One of the archivist’s missions is also to think about their preservation.
The Municipal Archives of Epernay are organized in three periods:
* old archives (1522-1790);
* modern archives (1791-1982);
* contemporary archives (1983 to the present day).
