Replacing the Faubourg Saint-Laurent cemetery, which had been open since 1766 and had become too small (around the Saint-Laurent chapel), the cemetery was created in 1832, the first burials taking place a few years later. Following a cholera epidemic, it was enlarged in 1849\. The original entrance was located at the level of the present place of the Martyrs of the Resistance (divisions 1 to 5). Today, more than 7,000 graves house more than 25,000 people.
