Casemate Rieffel
33 rue de l'Herbe, 67250 Oberroedern
Element of the Maginot line, the blockhouse Rieffel is the only blockhouse with basement, open to the public in Alsace. She(It) proposes a classic plan: upper floor with a bell and two rooms(chambers) of shooting(firing); lower floor which groups(includes) the zone life and the technical space. Works of this blockhouse began in 1929 to end in 1930 for part(party) concrete. Then followed the installation of the internal equipments: ventilation(breakdown)-filtering, electricity-lighting, engine, reservoirs of water, pumps and to finish the weaponry. The concrete(watertight) walls armed(equipped) make from 0.5 to 2.5 metres in thickness according to their exhibition(exposure). The bell of lookout and of shooting(firing) weighs 6 tons for an armour plating of 20 cms of steel. The access to the crenels(niches) of shooting(firing) and to the door is protected by a ditch(gap) 3 metres deep conscript ditch(gap) diamonds all over its shape. Approaches are protected by a network of antitank rails and of barbed wires. Bombed by the artillery and the German aviation in June, 1940, it carries stigmata still there.
