In 1638, in response to the plague epidemics, Bishop Sébastien Zamet established the Brotherhood of Charity, in charge of helping the «poor sick».
The institution is entrusted with the management of a hospital set up in several houses. The 1770 fire led to the design of a new, more functional building. Designed by Nicolas Durand, architect of the Champagne Region, the new hospital consists of two pavilions connected to a central chapel by two wings. The latter housed the rooms reserved for the sick. The side pavilions were equipped with a convalescent room, a pharmacy and an operating room. The whole combines symmetry and monumentality around a forecourt forming enclosed garden.
The central building of the composition, the rotunda chapel has a high-quality neo-classical decoration.
