Refuge fortifié
Cour de l'Église, 67330 Dossenheim-sur-Zinsel
Place of refuge for the humble, from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. Wall surrounding the church.
In the Middle Ages, to protect themselves during feudal wars, the peasants fortified the enclosure of the church or «Kirchhof», sacred place, place of peace and asylum. There they created Gadens, cells of habitat-refuge.
Among the many fortified cemeteries still visible in Alsace, that of Dossenheim-sur-Zinsel has something exceptional: it is the only one where these cells of habitat-refuge are preserved.
