In a society where everything goes too fast, come and take the time to discover emblematic documents of the history and culture of the region, from the 8th century to the present day.

In the Archives, we maintain a singular relationship to time. The staff invites you to a world, both prosaic and wonderful, where the exchanges between the present and the past, between the past and the future, are constant. The archive has the power to conjure up bygone times in the present of the reading room. The archivist collects, processes and preserves the documents that will testify, tomorrow, to today’s society.
Through these presentations of remarkable documents, visitors discover how they are preserved, how to preserve them from the damage of time, how to reconcile protection and communication and discover what constitutes the profession of archivist, entrusted with this centuries-old heritage!

Established since 2013 between the districts of Esplanade and Neudorf, the departmental archives are the work of the architect Bernard Ropa associated with the firm TOA architectes. The south facade (road side of the Rhine), lined with reflective stainless steel clings and the north facade, composed of silkscreen illustrations taken from the fonds of the departmental archives, make it a remarkable building of this neighborhood in rapid urbanization. A true setting for the written heritage of the department, the place preserves 35 linear kilometres of documents from the year 815 to the present day. to better reveal them to a curious audience of history and identity.
