Exceptional opening of the Parc de la Sous-Préfecture with the discovery of the fortifications and the medieval castle of Saint-Dizier.

In the second half of the 11th century, the family of lords of Dampierre created a fortified town at the confluence of the Marne and the Ornel. A city organized around a castle and fortifications flanked by a dozen towers. Over the centuries, it became a place of protection for the inhabitants and illustrious figures. Henri IV, Marie Stuart… After the Second World War, the castle houses the Sub-Prefecture.

The first mention(distinction) of a castle is made in 1189, the end of works dating of 1228\. The castle stays in the family Dampierre until 1401, date of the death of Édouard de Dampierre (Dampierre Saint-Dizier). The remarriage of his widow with Jean III de Vergy gets the castle in this family. The castle will be annexed to the royal domain in 1477\. He is then commanded(ordered) by a governor, backed up of a lieutenant. In the 16th century the royal engineers deeply change the castle by adding bastions there.
