In 1827, the Sisters of Divine Providence set up their mother house in Saint-Jean-de-Bael after having bought a former preceptory that belonged to the knights of the Order of Malta until the Revolution.
The Knights themselves had settled on the grounds of a monastery built in the ninth century by the Augustinians on the site of a chapel dedicated to the hermit Saint Bassollus.
During the next two centuries the congregation built several large buildings, a reception pavilion and a Gothic chapel around a central garden. A farm and a large wooded park adjoin the convent buildings.
About fifty Sisters currently reside in Saint-Jean-de-Baltil after a lifetime of service to the most vulnerable. The convent hosts groups for meetings or meetings of several days (trainings, seminars, retreats...).
