The Quai des Peceaux takes its name from the scaffolds, a wooden stick used to support the vines, called peceau en Haute-Marne. They were numerous on the banks of the reach, for many winegrowers lived there. Indeed, the whole of the hills surrounding Joinville was, until the mid-19th century and the phylloxera crisis, covered with vines. Until the seventeenth century, the reach stretched along the city walls, serving as a moat. The gradual dismantling of the fortifications allowed the installation of remarkable houses in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
