Abbaye bénédictine Saint-Paul

  • Indre-et-Loire

The City of Cormery presents in its current aspect the tracks of past more than millennium and owes its existence and its development to the foundation of a monastic establishment which will become the abbey Saint-Paul. Of Carolingian foundation, illustrated at that time by Alcuin, Cormery is the third of abbeys from Tours (after Marmoutier IVe century and saint Julien Ve / VIth century) The Abbey Saint-Paul was based(established) in 791 by Ithier, the chancellor de Charlemagne. Developed by Alcuin, the Abbey will take a considerable(significant) development and be at the head of 33 priories. The Abbey sheltered from monks Benedictines whose life was dictated according to precise rules(rulers). It was dismantled during revolution in 1791\. She(It) is today in her(its) archaeological state, best kept(preserved) and the most complete of the abbeys of Touraine.
