The priory, established in 974-975 at Sault, on a rocky spur overlooking the Portefeuille valley, depended on the abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire. Located on the borders of Berry and Limousin, it was a kind of bastion advanced of the possessions of the Abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire in Aquitaine and therefore was of great importance. The construction of the present church (classified among the historical monuments by decree of November 4, 1963) took place around 1020-1030\. The monastic establishment was designated from its origins until the Revolution, by the term provost. The provost, the titular representative of the monastery, subordinate to the abbot of Fleury, also governed the ecclesiastical seigneury having right of high justice over the town. Next door, the claustral prior regulated the spiritual life and the work of the monks. This particular situation, which continued until the end of the seventeenth century, is reflected in the topography of the monastic buildings located
