Ville de Vitré

Six kilometres south of the centre of Vitré, the Château des Rochers has belonged to the Sévigné family since 1410. It is in this medieval Gothic-style house that Madame de Sévigné (1626 - 1696), famous writer of the reign of Louis XIV, stayed 16 times, writing 297 letters, mainly to her daughter, the Countess de Grignan. The chapel was built in 1671 and the French garden created in 1690 by the landscaper André Le Nôtre.

In 30 metres above the valley of Vallière, the Castle of Rocks, old(former) property of Mathefelon, is built at the end of the XVth century by Sévigné. From 1644 till 1690, he(it) shelters the stays of Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marchioness of Sévigné. The park or wood of decoration is the work of the épistolière, while the French-style garden was commanded(ordered) by his son, Charles de Sévigné, to André Le Nôtre. The domain is acquired in 1715 by the Hay des Nétumières who will restore the castle and its dependences(outbuildings).
