"On the Silk Road: fabrics, luxury and power"
According to a Chinese legend recorded in the writings of Confucius, silk was discovered in 2640 B.C. by XiLingJJJi, the young woman of the third emperor of China, in the garden of the imperial palace when a cocoon fell from the tree into his hot tea. From China to the Mediterranean basin to Iran and Turkey, this exhibition allows you to admire more than a hundred rare and precious fabrics of silk, velvet, gold and silver thread.
These fabrics made in prestigious shopping centres come from East and West, from late Antiquity (7th-8th century) to modern times, along the Silk Road. From pomegranate, a symbol of prosperity, to the lion, a symbol of power, they offer a rich array of embroidery, symbols and calligraphy. These are luxurious and refined fabrics, synonymous with power and luxury, are used notably in vestments of abbots but also in decorations of buildings, chapels, churches and liturgical ornaments.
Private collection of D. Moiselet for the first time exhibited.

Discover the sculpted decorations that adorned the Cluny III Abbey Church. The exact date of construction of the palace of Jean de Bourbon is not known. It would be between 1456, the date of the abbot’s election, and 1485, the date of his death. Departing from the precepts of the Rule of Saint Benedict, the building is built away from the cloister, while remaining inside the enclosure of the abbey. Indeed, the old abbey house was difficult to access and the visit of high dignitaries and foreign guests disrupted the silence that was to reign in the cloister.
Jean de Bourbon was born in 1413, he is the natural son of Duke Jean I of Bourbon. In 1443, while already being bishop of Puy, he was strongly recommended by the king of France Charles VII to the monks of Cluny. He became abbot in 1456\. A simple, cultured and devout man, he devoted his twenty-nine years as an abbey to the embellishment of the abbey and the fight against the decadence of the Cluny order.
