Since 1838, the municipality of Pontarlier has been promoting the idea of opening its museum. For one hundred and fifty years, individuals and artists, generous donors, gather various collections: portraits of personalities of the Haut-Doubs, earthenware, works of artists comtois, engravings relating to the history of absinthe, carved wooden pieces of the religious buildings of Pontarlier, archaeological furniture. All these pieces prefigure the orientations of the collections of the municipal museum which was officially created in 1977\. The works, stored in the attic of the City Hall, are then brought back to the «Maison Labrut», acquired by the City and intended to present the collections permanently. The museum opened in 1982.
This old bourgeois house is one of the oldest houses of the city: part of the building is already in place in the fifteenth century as evidenced by the bays under brace preserved in facade. The ceilings with exposed joists date from the seventeenth century. B
