Visit of the Glenos Mine and Well Museum

Dive into the universe of the underground world!
Dimanche 18 septembre 2022, 14h00Passé
Musée de la Mine La Machine

For nearly two hundred years, coal was the city’s main resource. In 1974, when the last well closed at La Machine, many miners wanted to perpetuate the memory of their profession through an educational, pedagogical but also captivating place.
Opened in 1983, the Mine Museum consists of two complementary sites:

  • The Mine Museum, trace the history of coal and the life of the Black Faces.
  • The Glenos Well and Mine Gallery, share the harsh working conditions of miners, women, children and animals.
Please note: Lamps and helmets will be provided for the visit (wearing flat shoes is strongly recommended).

Installed(Settled) in the old(former) administrative seat(siege) of Coal mines, the museum redraws the history(story) of the coal and the life of the minors(miners) (the bottom, the lunch, dramas, leisures). The museum shelters the registered objects, photographies and models by the old(former) minors(miners). You will find also the office(desk) of the directors, a big(great) room of plans, a model of the city, collections of minerals and fossils, lamps of minors(miners) and the evocation of a mining housing environment there. The Well of Glénons and its mine gallery are located on the place of its old(former) activity. Here they share with you hard working conditions of the minors(miners), women, children and of animals. This unique(only) space livened up(led) by guides, describes know-how used to extract the coal, techniques of props, safety(security), working conditions.
