By Dominique De Carli, Director of Urban Planning of the City of Chalon and Grand Chalon and Juliette Barbarin, Curator Delegate for Antiquities and Objects of Art, Chargé de mission patrimoine mobilier de la Ville de Chalon-sur Saône. The transformation of the site of the former hospital on Île Saint-Laurent is a major issue, which initially involves the demolition of high buildings between 1960 and 1980, without any particular architectural interest, which will allow new buildings to be erected but also to improve the value of existing old buildings. This delicate step includes the careful preservation of buildings protected under the title of Historical Monuments as well as ancient objects, heritage of the hospital preserved in-situ. Then comes the implementation of an urban project whose contours are currently emerging.

The creation of a hospital on the island Saint Laurent(Lawrence) goes back up(raises) to the XVIth century. The building(ship) of the community of the sisters, along the Saône, recognizable in its pine nut(cog) in degrees, testifies of this time(period). Today, it is possible to discover to it a part(party) of the apartments of the sisters of Sainte-Marthe, in load(responsibility) of the welcome(reception) of the sick during several centuries. Over time, the hospital grew rich of numerous buildings(ships) answering the evolution of medicine and of cares to the sick. It is so possible to admire the pharmacy of the XVIIIth century sheltering about 400 drawers. The dome at the crossroads of four rooms of sick is built in 1770s. The chapel of the XIXth century is adorned with stained-glass windows of the XVIth century which result(come) from the first room of sick built in Renaissance. The room of tin presenting the hospitable(hospital) dishes(crockery) and the refectory of the sisters (1720), which keeps(preserves) its arrangement(development) of origin and in particular its woodworks listed(classified) by rocaille style, is also visible. The hospital is also rich in an important collection of objects, furniture and works of art, witnesses(batons) of hospitable(hospital) history(story) and of religious art for the XVIth century.
