As part of the European Heritage Days and the "Careers and Materials" days of UNICEM, the CBS quarry (Carrières Bourgogne Sud) of Chaux opens its doors to you to discover the aggregate industry. With an annual national consumption of around 450 million tonnes, aggregate is one of the most widely used raw materials in France. Its employment, mainly in the field of construction and land use planning, is the basis of our architectural and built heritage. As the aggregates travel little, the quarries are located as close as possible to the consumption basins. It is therefore a local product whose nature varies according to the regional geology In this context, the sector has long been committed to sustainable development through the association «UNICEM Entreprises Engagés» which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2022. It thus manages the Cap Environnement approach, which certifies sites committed to environmental progress and the CSR Careers and Materials label.
In operation for nearly a century, the Chaux site provides quality materials for the local market. Currently, approximately 250,000 t of aggregate is produced annually from the Bathonian limestone formations. Certified by the Cap Environnement standard at the Maturity level, the quarry integrates the environmental challenges of its territory, notably with the installation of innovative devices to reduce dust emissions. The site is also a refuge for certain species such as the Great Horned Owl, which regularly nests on the quarry fronts. His presence is regularly monitored by LPO volunteers. This Open Day is therefore an opportunity to discover this sector and this little-known industrial heritage. On the program:
