À propos du lieu

Abbaye Saint-Philibert
Place de l'Abbaye, 71700 Tournus
  • Saône-et-Loire
  • Bourgogne-Franche-Comté
Built by the monks fleeing Noirmoutier before the Norman invader, to shelter the relics of their Holy Founder Philibert, the abbey of Tournus is one of the most prestigious shrines of the first Romanesque art. Remarkably preserved, it dominates with its pink and ochre stones the city of Tournus on the right bank of the Saône. The interior of the abbey surprises by its size, its height under the vault, the light of the nave and the great nave as well as by the slender pillars and the vault formed by transverse cradles. The abbey house a crypt and the chapel of Saint-Michel. Medieval mosaics representing the zodiac are now visible. Connected to the church by the parlor, the abbey buildings bring together the cloister, the chapter hall, the refectory and the cellar.
