Abbaye cistercienne de Clavas
Clavas 43220 Riotord
- Haute-Loire
- Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
In the town of Riotord, at the foot of Mount Felletin, this site, seat of a former Cistercian abbey of women has preserved the characteristic isolation of this austere order. From the abbey founded in the thirteenth century there remains only the Gothic choir. It is decorated with a large altarpiece in painted wood of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The nave is also from this period. The little virgin in gilded wood that surmounts the tabernacle is of a classic finesse. Trompe l'oeil paintings have been discovered recently. The complex has been added to the additional inventory of historical monuments since November 24, 2003\. Far from any pollution, nature has preserved its purity and richness: natural meadows, forest and sunny wetlands host several protected plants that justified the creation of a ZNIEFF. A cloister garden combining aromatic, medicinal and decorative plants, a contemporary garden and a discovery trail complete the set. The association «Les Clavari et Amis»
