The count Amédée V of Savoy acquires the castle of Chambéry in 1295 and commits(hires) numerous works that his successors will pursue in the XIVth and XVth century: extra height of the strengthened mound, creation of the porterie, residential and administrative buildings(ships) and of four tours(towers, ballots) (big(great) missing tower, tour(tower, ballot) Cash(Finance), half round tower and tour(tower, ballot) of archives). Fortress, residence of Court(Yard), the castle is also the seat(siege) of the state-owned administration (treasure of charters, resident Council(Advise), Chancellery, Chamber(Room) of accounts). In 1408, the count Amédée VIII, future duke of Savoy, makes establish a new chapel which, shelters at the end of the XVth century the Saint shroud, taking then the name of Sainte-Chapelle. After the fire of 1532 then the French activity(occupation) of the duchy (1536-1559) the Saint shroud is transferred in Turin in 1578\. After the departure of the court(yard) in Turin, new capital of the States of Savoy in 1563, the castle keeps(preserves) an administrative and political role; embellishments and arrangements(developments) are begun(undertaken) between the environment(middle) of the XVIIth century and the end of the XVIIIth century: facade of the Sainte-Chapelle, gardens and terraces, Royal Wing But several fires mark the building permanently and it is necessary to wait for the beginning of the XIXth century so that the royal apartments and the Sainte-Chapelle are restored. During the annexation of the Savoy in France in 1860, the castle is given up(sold) to the Department of the Savoy. Classified as "Historic Monument" in 1881, it is allocated in 1890 to the services(departments) of the Department and of the Prefecture.
