À propos du lieu

Musée Départemental du Sel / Porte de France
Porte de France, 57630 Marsal
  • Moselle
  • Grand Est
This rich centre of salt production has known a turbulent history, whose traces remain in the basement and the architecture of the city. The Porte de France, home of the Musée Départemental du Sel, is the most emblematic illustration because it evokes the name of the prestigious Maréchal de Vauban.
The Museum tells the story of «white gold» through the techniques of production from Prehistory to the present day. Set in a remnant of the Vauban fortifications, it also evokes the history of Marsal, a former stronghold whose strategic importance evolves over time.
The municipality is located in the Saulnois south of the department of Moselle, 8 kilometers south-east of Château-Salins and 4 kilometers east of Moyenvic. It is part of the Lorraine Regional Natural Park. The Marsal site was originally a marsh surrounded by two arms of the Seille. This village located on the ancient Roman road from Metz to Strasbourg was marked by the exploitation of salt, very abundant in the basement. Marsal
