For centuries, religious and temporal powers have clashed, which is reflected here in Senones.

When the Prince of Salm-Salm chose Senones as the capital of his independent state in 1751, this duality was illustrated by the installation of the castle opposite the abbey.

Senones was the capital of an independent state called the «Principality of Salm Salm», until 1793 when it was reunited with the Nation. This principality included this castle, the Second Castle of the Princes of Salm-Salm, built between 1773 and 1778\. It was sold as a national property in 1799 and turned into a spinning mill in 1821.
It has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1994.
