Pioneer in Lorraine, the RNN of Hettange-Grande was created on April 4, 1985 by decree of the Prime Minister, to protect a geological heritage of international value. It is currently one of the 14 National Reserves in France and the only one in Lorraine based on this criterion. Located on the former quarry of Gries, it covers an area of 6.1 ha with the highest protection status of the French territory, in order to protect its geological specificities but also its remarkable natural environments.
