As part of European Heritage Days, a guided tour of the old(former) fortified town of Villefranche is organised on Sunday, September 16th at 14 h.
With its 8 streets in star and its path round the battlements, this old(former) royal fortified town was built by François 1st in 1545 close to the river Meuse(Maas).

Villefranche, located on the Left Bank of the Meuse(Maas), played a military and political role mattering during the XVIth century s. Strong place(square) created on order of François Ier, it represented the ideal model of the bastionnée modern fortification appeared during Renaissance at the instigation of the Italian architects. It will be dismantled during the Thirty Years War.
