The count Hugues of Vaudémont indeed favoured the setting-up(presence) of the Templars on the territory of Rugney in his return of Holy Land. In 1173, the commanderie of Xugney is mentioned in a charter signed between Pierre, his commander and Gérard, abbot of Senones. The chapel is built at this end of the 12th century. The templars receive the authorisation in 1255, from the abbess of Bouxières, to dig(accentuate) a headrace channel of the water of the Moselle in their mill of Virecourt. The order of Temple will be the commanderie of Xugney dissolve in 1314, will pass so under the control of Hospital workers in the order of Saint Jean de Jérusalem. The chapel is then devoted to Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Today deprived property, the chapel is promoted by the Association " Commanderie Templière de Rugney ".
